01 In brief

Swiss Science Center Technorama in Winterthur is one of Europe's largest science centres — a place where natural phenomena are not displayed behind glass but handed to you as experiments. More than 500 interactive stations invite visitors to generate lightning, set pendulums swinging, bend water streams and build their own machines, supported by open laboratories and workshop programmes.

Technorama describes itself as Switzerland's largest extracurricular learning venue for STEM subjects, and it takes that role seriously: schools use it as a practical extension of the classroom, while for most families it is simply the most entertaining physics lesson in the country. The centre is open 365 days a year and draws well over 360,000 visitors annually.

02 Why it's interesting

  • 01 Every exhibit is a real experiment, not a button-pressing animation — phenomena are genuinely produced in front of you, with variables you can change and outcomes you can fail at and retry.
  • 02 It converts abstract school physics into bodily experience: you feel gyroscopic forces, see your own heat portrait, and watch chaotic systems refuse to repeat themselves.
  • 03 The open labs and workshops go beyond demonstration — visitors can work with tools and materials, from electronics to glass, in guided formats.
  • 04 It is a model of how a society teaches itself science: curiosity-driven, multilingual, unpretentious and open every single day of the year.

03 How it works

Technorama follows the science-centre philosophy of interactive, self-directed discovery rather than curated display.

Exhibition zones are organised around phenomena — electricity and magnetism, mechanics, light and vision, water and fluids, mathematics — with hundreds of stations designed so that the visitor completes the experiment. The exhibit only "works" when you act on it.

The pedagogic model is deliberate: trial, error and play. Stations are robust, redundant (there are many ways to explore the same principle) and described in plain language, so different ages and backgrounds can enter the same phenomenon at different depths.

Alongside the exhibition floor, supervised labs and workshop formats let visitors go further — designing experiments, building objects and experiencing scientific practice as a process rather than a result.

04 The organisation behind it

Technorama operates as an independent Swiss science-centre institution dedicated to public science education, working closely with schools, teacher training and the education authorities. Its funding model combines admissions with public and private support for its educational mission.

05 In the real world

Technorama's product is scientifically literate curiosity. It supports the Swiss school system at every level, trains teachers to teach through experiment, and serves as a reference for the international science-centre movement — proof that a small country can run a first-rank public science institution with consistent quality for decades.

06 Can you visit?

Open daily, all year

Yes — fully. Technorama is one of the easiest recommendations in this atlas: open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 including weekends and public holidays, with ticket options for families and schools.

Plan several hours; the labs and shows have schedules worth checking on the official site before you go.
